Video Interview with Oscar Johnson

On August 1. 1995, I had the opportunity to chat with Hall of Famer Oscar Johnson.  Oscar was the first Black to win a USLTA tournament, winning the National Public Parks Junior title in 1948.  He spoke of his beginnings in tennis, his triumphs, his losses….his disappointments.   This is a three-part interview that is available only on this website.

    Bobby D,
Great video with Oscar Johnson . He certainly was a fantastic player. I had the misfortune to meet him in that 1950 tournament in which he beat George Stewart. It was at the Shady Rest Country Club in New Jersey. His volleys were superb, as well as his smooth ground strokes. Hope he’s still alive.
